Rey started playing softball at the age of 15 for the Shamrock Dairy Team in Tucson. Positions played: first base, catcher and pitcher. In the 1960's, he played for the AZ Highway team, Enders Trucking, Lightning Movers and Triple S. A 20 year playing career earned Rey the nickname of "Ironman".

Iron Man Rey Contreras hurled AZ Highway Dept to the Arizona Softball Association tournament title beating Reppel Steel 5-2. Rey pitched four straight victories and a sweep of the tournament for AHD.

AZ Hwy Department Team wins ASA Cactus Region to qualify for nations in Springfield, Ohio. AZ 15 members on team. Nationals had 22 teams. AZ was also ASA Phx Metro League Champions. Pitchers Rey with 19-3 record and Virgil Cooker (12-5)

Enders beat Kitchell Contractors 5-4. Wining pitcher Rey Contreras hit a bases loaded drive to left-center in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Peter Giroux from
third with the deciding run. James catcher.

July 23, 1969
Rey pitching for Tally and Page upset Hays Roofing 3-2. Rey beat Jerry Wells.

Tally and Page team. Rey throws 3 hitter and has two hits himself.
